St George and Dragon Memorial, Ooij, Holland

The bas relief in the centre of this Memorial is badly worn but a little effort will uncover a dragon at the bottom with a knight on horseback leaning down to strike at the creature with a sword. The symbolism is clearly that the Germans are the dragon and the Allies are St George. The figures are built into the wall of Ooij church. It was erected on 4 May 1989 the day before the day commemorated by the Dutch as their final liberation from the Nazi occupation. The panels flanking the figures bear the names of the twenty civilians killed in the cellars of a local cafe on 28 September during the period of Operation Market Garden. A German fighter bomber had dropped two bombs onto it. The other names are those who lost their lives during the fighting on the Grebbeberg defence line in 1940 during the bombardment of Nijmegen. The nearby cemetery contains a number of Dutch war graves
