Street damage from riots Vienna Circa 1919

As Germany collapsed with the departure of the Kaiser and the spread of the socialist insurrections, so the Austro-Hungarian Empire also fell. Vienna had been the capital of the Empire which had been established by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1867 (whose head appeared on the worlds first postcard - see Illus 1). As civil disorder spread throughout Austria and Germany, both countries proclaimed themselves to be republics. There was much destruction and bloodshed for both countries in the turbulent years after the Armistice. The damage shown in the postcard was done in a street riot
