A striking anti-fascist card warning Americans about Fascism
In Italy in 1919 Mussolini had founded the Fascist Movement and, through virulent propaganda, emotive speeches, extravagant parades and rallies, he had mobilised the country behind him. He built up the armed forces and in 1935 began a series of military invasions seeking to enhance Italys international standing through military conquest. His first victory was Ethiopia. Hitler wished to follow the same path and he made no secret of his admiration of El Duce. To those who recognised the danger signals, it was important to bring the United States into the world arena as Anti-Fascist. Hungarian-born Jewish artist Gyula Zilzers work was virulently anti-Nazi from the 1930s onward. Known as the voice of Anti-Fascism, he lived in the USA from 1932 until his death in 1969
