On 1 October 1920, Karl Rudolf Gerd von Rundstedt, having just left the old German Army, joined the Reichsgwehr as a Lieutenant-Colonel. By 1932 he was a full General. His ideas were largely responsible for the German breakthrough in France in 1940, but he was defeated on the Ukranian Front in 1942.He was captured by the Americans and served three years in prison, partly in Britain, where he was extensively interviewed by Liddell Hart. He was probably Germany's oldest soldier, and certainly one of the most respected
