The Victorie Brug, The Corridor, September 1944
This is a rare photo. Operation Market Garden was a joint air and land assault towards Germany, starting in Belgium and then on through Holland. The airborne troops were tasked to capture the bridges over the major rivers en-route so that the armoured land forces could drive over them, and the route along which the advance was to take place was named The Corridor'. In total, however, there were some 20 Dutch bridges and this badly worn plaque was on the first bridge of The Corridor (over the small River Dommel) and was driven over by elements of the Guards Armoured Division on 17 September 1944. One of the earliest Market Garden markers, it disappeared shortly after this photo. The last bridge of the 20, the one at Arnhem, was as Cornelius Ryan named it, A Bridge Too Far
