The struggle to maintain the rule of government against the tide of Bolshevist revolution, produced an uneasy liaison between the paramilitary Freikorps and the regular army. Here, in March 1919, they both man a street barricade as part of martial law control of the city. A year later, however, Freikorps units tried to take over Berlin - a move that was defeated by a socialist general strike.
