On 23 March 1934 Adolf Hitler was given total power by the Reichstag to destroy he red peril. He wasted no time in intensifying a process which had already begun and which was called Gleichshaltung (streamlining). The traditional May Day celebrations took place under the title National Labour Day, with apparent Nazi approval, but twenty-four hours later the SA broke into left-wing trade union offices, arrested the officials and sent most of them to concentration camps. In June the Trade Union movement was dissolved and replaced by the German Labour Front. This official card celebrates May Day 1934, the first Labour Day of the Nazi regime
