Franz Werfel, Austrian-Bohemian Jewish novelist, playwright and poet. Born in Prague, he moved to Vienna, but left for France in 1938, and from there to America, to avoid Nazi persecution. He is best known for his book, The Song of Bernadette (1941), the story of Bernadette of Lourdes
