The Time & Tide Map of the Atlantic Charter

An outstanding example of the famous Time and Tide poster map of the Atlantic Charter designed by Leslie MacDonald Gill in 1942. The poster was commissioned by Time and Tide magazine to commemorate the signing of this historic Anglo-American agreement and to look forward to the end of the war. The Atlantic Charter is reproduced in full at the top, together with the facsimilia signatures of President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill, which were supplied to the artist and attached to the original painting. The main part of the poster depicts the world's agriculture and industrial raw materials, as symbolic of the free and equal trade promised by Article 4 of the Charter: "here are indicated the chief products of each country for the furtherance of a sane economic and international policy for mankind." In the bottom left corner, a man can be seen beating swords into ploughshares " a symbolic reference to the optimistic future envisaged by the Charter "after the final destruction of Nazi tyranny" (Article 6)
