Cartoon, The opening of Parliament or the air gun plot or the infamous attack on his Majesty. This print recalls the supposed attempt on King George III's life in October 1795 when his coach was surrounded by an angry crowd whilst on the way to open Parliament. A pane of glass was broken, possibly by a bullet from an air gun, or just a stone. Fox and his Whig colleagues were constantly vilified in the essentially loyalist satirical prints because of their initial sympathy to the French Revolution. In this case Fox is shown as the actual assassin. In fact the opening of Parliament in 1797 passed off without incident
