Satirical cartoon, Cross Examination. A large Cornwallis and diminutive Napoleon Bonaparte confront each other. Cornwallis asks about Bonaparte's fleet: your fleet having sail'd has given cause for many conjectures'. A French expedition to the West Indies which set out in December 1801 to deal with Toussaint l'Ouverture, the black rebel, and to force San Domingo to submit, caused anxieties in England. Warnings were given to Bonaparte through Cornwallis that a British fleet would be sent to intervene
