Satirical cartoon, The Royal Extinguisher
Satirical cartoon, The Royal Extinguisher or Gulliver Putting out the Patriots of Lilliput !!! One of many satires following the Treasonable Practices and Seditious Meetings Bills of November 1795 which brought speech and writing within the scope of treason and put severe restrictions on public meetings. The Lilliputian radicals under the extinguisher are caught in a hoop labelled Copenhagen, referring to the radical meeting held by the London Corresponding Society in Copenhagen Fields in October 1795. Pitt's giant lamp is inscribed For protecting his majesty's person': the attack on the king's coach in Westminster on 29 October was attributed by the government to the inflammatory proceedings at Copenhagen Fields
