Satirical cartoon, Self Murder or the Wolf tried and convicted on his own Evidence. Joseph Priestley, a prominent dissenter, hangs from a gallows, a Wolf in sheep's clothing. Above the gallows Richard Price, with the body of a serpent, fires a cannon at a bishop and parson crying Down with their Cathedral Stalls and Caterpillars'. A row of dissenters sprout from the earth watered by a small demon - serpents spreading Enthusiasm, Fanaticism, Atheism, Sedition'. Priestley's home in Birmingham had recently been attacked by a Church and State mob and this provocative print reflects the profound disquiet in the country
