Satirical cartoon, The First Articles in Requisition
Satirical cartoon, The First Articles in Requisition at Amsterdam or the Sans Culotts Become Touts Culotts. French revolutionary sans-culottes who have invaded Holland requisition the baggy breeches worn by the Dutch and engage in pillaging. The Dutchman, now without trousers, is dismayed: Oh my Dollars and Ducats D-n their Citizenship; A fellow here calls me Frere Citoyen and takes away all my Property'. Coins pour from the breeches to show that the Dutch are being robbed. In spite of the fraternisation between Dutch Patriots and the French, the introduction of assignats, a forced paper currency, requisitions and stagnation of trade soon aroused discontent
