Satirical cartoon, Law and Equity, or a peep at Nando's
Satirical cartoon, Law and Equity, or a peep at Nando's. Lord Chancellor Thurlow wearing a pure white sheet, barefooted, but with his usual wig, approaches an attractive barmaid in the well-known coffee house Nando's in Temple Bar. Behind him is a bishop who preaches Thou shalt not Commit adultery'. Early in his life Thurlow had wanted to marry Mary Edmonds who had worked at Nando's, and this print revives some old, anonymous scandalmongering. The left side of the print is an interesting evocation of a coffee house interior
