Satirical cartoon, The Padlock. To be or not to be a Queen is the Question. One of a number of prints on the suspected marriage of the Prince of Wales to Mrs Fitzherbert, a Roman Catholic widow. The secret marriage of December 1785 became the talk of the town and the prints contributed to the gossip and innuendo. The Prince was a very public and scandalous figure. His philandering and gambling, the bad company he kept, and his extravagance and debts were well known
