Satirical cartoon, Satan's Return from Earth [Egypt deleted], Discovered in Council - with Belzebub and Belial - a sketch after Fuseli. A disgruntled General Bonaparte as Satan (as in Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost) sits enthroned amongst billowing clouds with demonic attendants Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes and Pierre Roger Ducos, as a kind of Holy Trinity. Below is a crowd of jubilant bonnet-rouge-wearing, dagger-wielding supporters. The cartoon refers to Napoleon's surprise appearance in Paris in the autumn of 1799 after returning from his ill-fated Egyptian campaign, his overthrowing of the Directory, establishment of the Consulate, with himself as First Consul. The reference to Fuseli relates to the artist's Milton Gallery
