Cartoon, Foul Play or Humphreys and Johnson a Match for Mendoza. This print records a boxing match held at Odiham Hampshire on 9 January 1788, widely reported by the press. The course and outcome of the fight is recorded on the lengthy inscription (below) -- while Humphries was declared the winner, the result was far from decisive. The two men fought again, in 1789 and 1790, and Mendoza won both times. Gillray produced a number of such boxing prints in 1788 and a striking aquatint portrait of the famous Jewish boxer Mendoza in classic pugilist pose
