Der Adler, No 22, 29th October 1940

Der Adler (The Eagle), 29th October 1940. Published with the cooperation of the Reich Aviation Ministry, The Eagle was a heavily illustrated bi-weekly propaganda magazine specialising in the activities of the Luftwaffe, which used photographic images to great effect. The first issue was published on the 1st March 1939, with the final issue appearing on the 12th September 1944. Der Adler was a prestigious and important propaganda tool for the NS regime and from the start it appeared in numerous international editions with Der Adler published in; Belgium, Denmark, France, Holland, Italy, Croatia, Norway, Protectorate (Bohemia and Moravia, a state created after the German invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1939), Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey, and Hungary. There was also a short-lived English language edition published in the USA during 1941 which stopped after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, as well as an Arabic-language edition. The cover picture shows a bomber over London during the Blitz, with the caption; In the spotlight of London's flak'. While the main cover story is centred on the life of a Luftwaffe hero, Major Molders, who was the first pilot in history to shoot down 100 enemy aircraft. He would die in a plane crash just over a year later on the 22 November, 1941, aged 28
