Cover of Munchener Illustrierte Presse, Issue 37, dated 12 September 1935. One of Germany's leading illustrated weekly magazines, the Munchener Illustrierte Presse combined photojournalism with current affairs and cultural reporting. Published on the eve of the 1935 Nuremberg Rally, the cover depicts sculptors completing a monumental relief for the Reichsparteitag der Freiheit ('Party Rally of Freedom'). Designed by sculptor Richard Klein, the large ceremonial plaque features the profile of Adolf Hitler beneath a Reich eagle and swastika, flanked by military symbols, while craftsmen apply the finishing touches before its installation in Nuremberg. Appearing just days before the rally at which the Nuremberg Laws were proclaimed, the cover illustrates the importance attached to monumental art, symbolism and spectacle in the visual culture of the Nazi state, documenting the extensive preparations that transformed Nuremberg into the regime's principal ceremonial stage
