Der Sturmer No. 45

Der Sturmer, No. 45, 7 November 1940. Rare wartime issue of Julius Streicher's notorious antisemitic weekly newspaper, published to coincide with the annual commemoration of the failed Beer Hall Putsch of 9 November 1923. The front page is headed 'Der Segen des Opfertodes' ('The Blessing of Sacrificial Death'), presenting the deaths of the sixteen National Socialists killed during the Munich putsch as the foundation myth of the Third Reich. Accompanied by an idealised heroic illustration titled 'Ewiges Deutschtum' ('Eternal Germandom'), the cover glorifies sacrifice, martyrdom and unwavering loyalty to Hitler as sacred national virtues. Issued one year after the outbreak of the Second World War, the newspaper employs the language of sacrifice to encourage continued commitment to the Nazi cause while pairing this message with Der Sturmer's familiar antisemitic slogan, 'Die Juden sind unser Ungluck!' ('The Jews are our misfortune!'), prominently displayed across the foot of the page. Inside, the issue continues its relentless programme of antisemitic propaganda, illustrating how the regime linked wartime mobilisation with racial ideology and the cult of its political martyrs
