Produced with the involvement of the Reich Air Ministry (Reichsluftfahrtministerium), Der Adler was the Luftwaffe's principal illustrated propaganda magazine during the Second World War. This special issue, titled 'Frankreichs Aufmarsch entschleiert!' ('France's military deployment revealed!'), is devoted to German aerial reconnaissance over France during the opening months of the war. The cover depicts two Luftwaffe aircrew wearing oxygen masks during a high-altitude reconnaissance mission, accompanied by a caption describing the physical demands of long-range flights over French territory. Published during the period of the Phoney War, several months before the German offensive in the West, the issue presents aerial photography, intelligence reports and analysis of French military infrastructure, including the Maginot Line, portraying German air reconnaissance as an essential element in preparing for future operations while reinforcing the image of the Luftwaffe as technologically advanced and strategically superior
