Der Arbeitsmaid - celebratory book

Die Arbeitsmaid, large-format illustrated photobook and magazine issued by the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD), celebrating the role of young women in the female branch of the National Labour Service. Produced in an oversized format comparable to contemporary illustrated magazines, the publication contains 52 pages of photographs, artwork and text devoted to the ideals, duties and daily life of the Arbeitsmaiden. The striking wraparound colour cover depicts an idealised blonde young woman carrying agricultural tools against a backdrop of ripened grain fields, while the rear cover continues the rural scene with a mother and children beside a farmhouse. Throughout the publication, photographs and illustrations present the female labour service as a blend of agricultural work, physical fitness, communal living and national service. Features include coverage of labour camps, daily routines, harvest work, folk traditions, outdoor activities, cycling, group exercises and rural domestic tasks, alongside articles promoting the social and ideological aims of the organisation. One section reproduces Adolf Hitlers address to the Reichsarbeitsdienst gathering at Nuremberg, while other pages emphasise themes central to National Socialist ideology, including the connection between youth, countryside, labour and national community. Particularly notable are the publications sophisticated visual design, combining documentary photography, graphic illustration and modern page layouts characteristic of high-quality German illustrated publishing of the late 1930s. An important visual document of the female Reich Labour Service, reflecting official representations of womens roles within National Socialist society and the broader Blut und Boden ('Blood and Soil') ideal linking nation, land and rural life
