This issue, dated November 1937, carries the headline 'Metternichgeist gegen Nationalstaatsgedanken' ('The Spirit of Metternich versus the National Idea'), reflecting contemporary debates over Austrian independence, German nationalism and the future political relationship between Austria and Germany. Published twice monthly between 1935 and early 1938, the newspaper served the community of Austrian National Socialists and Pan-German nationalists operating from Germany while the Austrian Nazi Party remained illegal under the governments of Engelbert Dollfuss and Kurt Schuschnigg. The masthead incorporates an Austrian eagle bearing a swastika, symbolising the publication's advocacy of a German-Austrian national identity. The issue appeared only months before Adolf Hitler's meeting with Benito Mussolini in September 1937 helped remove the principal obstacle to German annexation of Austria. Following the Anschluss in March 1938, the distinct political identity promoted by publications such as Deutsch-osterreichische Nachrichten rapidly disappeared as Austria was absorbed into the German Reich.
