Deutsche Moden-Zeitung

Cover of Deutsche Moden-Zeitung (German Fashion Newspaper), July 1941, 50th year of publication, issued by Verlag Otto Beyer of Leipzig and Berlin. One of Germanys longest-running fashion and household magazines, Deutsche Moden-Zeitung combined clothing designs, sewing patterns, domestic advice and features aimed at women managing households during the Second World War. This issue was published in the magazines 'Ausgabe A' format, which included a pattern sheet for readers wishing to make garments at home. The cover features an elegant fashion illustration of a woman dressed in a tailored blue-grey suit with matching hat and gloves, holding a bouquet of flowers. Despite wartime conditions, the image projects refinement, composure and femininity, demonstrating how German fashion magazines continued to promote style and personal presentation even as clothing restrictions and material shortages increasingly affected everyday life. Interior pages include illustrated summer dress designs, practical clothing patterns for women and children, knitting and lacework features, domestic craft projects and articles on household management. The emphasis on making, repairing and adapting clothing reflects the growing importance of self-sufficiency during wartime, while still maintaining an aspirational vision of contemporary fashion. Articles on folk art and traditional crafts further reflect the periods interest in regional culture and domestic production. Published during the middle years of the war, the magazine provides a valuable record of how fashion publishing adapted to changing circumstances, balancing elegance and practicality while encouraging readers to create and maintain fashionable clothing through home sewing and needlework
