Die Pause, No. 3, 4th Year (1938), large-format Austrian cultural magazine published in Vienna shortly after the Anschluss. Originally established in 1935 as a Catholic workers� cultural and educational periodical, Die Pause was transformed following Austria�s incorporation into the German Reich in March 1938 and reoriented towards National Socialist cultural themes. Produced to a remarkably high standard, the magazine combines sophisticated typography, generous use of white space and high-quality photographic reproduction, giving it a visual appearance closer to a modern illustrated cultural review than a conventional political publication. Published under the auspices of the Vienna municipal administration, the magazine sought to integrate Austrian cultural life into the wider concept of a Greater German national culture while retaining a distinctly Viennese emphasis on the arts, theatre, scholarship and regional heritage. Contemporary advertisements, cultural commentary and extensive photographic illustration provide a valuable record of Austrian intellectual and cultural life during the early period of National Socialist rule.
