Die Pause No. 8, 4th Year - Cultural Magazine, Vienna

Die Pause, No. 8, 4th Year (1939). Large-format Austrian cultural and political magazine published in Vienna following the Anschluss, when the former Catholic workers periodical was transformed into a lavishly illustrated publication aligned with National Socialist cultural policy. This issue appeared shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War and provides a striking example of the shift from peacetime cultural programming towards wartime themes and propaganda. The dramatic cover design depicts a column of German military vehicles advancing across a stylised red heraldic field, symbolising the opening military campaigns of the Third Reich. Interior articles reflect the political atmosphere of autumn 1939, including features on the outbreak of war, the German military, the concept of German national destiny, and the status of Danzig following Germanys invasion of Poland. Illustrated articles such as Grossdeutschlands erste Waffentat ('Greater Germanys First Military Action') combine contemporary photographs of German troops and military operations with ideological commentary. As with other issues of Die Pause, the publication is notable for its sophisticated visual presentation. Modern typography, carefully arranged photographic layouts, generous use of white space and high-quality printing place it among the most visually accomplished Austrian magazines of the period. The issue demonstrates how culture, politics and wartime propaganda became increasingly intertwined following the outbreak of war, making it a valuable record of the changing priorities of National Socialist publishing in Austria during 1939
