Die Pause, No. 9, 4th Year (1939). Large-format Austrian cultural magazine published in Vienna following the Anschluss, when the former Catholic educational and workers� periodical was incorporated into the cultural framework of National Socialist Austria. This thematic issue is devoted almost entirely to rural life, agriculture and the German peasantry, providing a richly illustrated example of the Blut und Boden ('Blood and Soil') ideology that occupied a central place in National Socialist thought. The striking cover depicts an idealised farming family carrying agricultural tools and harvest crops, accompanied by children and symbols of rural prosperity.
