Die Pause No. 9, 4th Year - Cultural Magazine, Vienna

Die Pause, No. 9, 4th Year (1939). Large-format Austrian cultural magazine published in Vienna following the Anschluss, when the former Catholic educational and workers periodical was incorporated into the cultural framework of National Socialist Austria. This thematic issue is devoted almost entirely to rural life, agriculture and the German peasantry, providing a richly illustrated example of the Blut und Boden ('Blood and Soil') ideology that occupied a central place in National Socialist thought. The striking cover depicts an idealised farming family carrying agricultural tools and harvest crops, accompanied by children and symbols of rural prosperity. Throughout the issue, articles, photographs and illustrations celebrate the farmer as the foundation of the nation and present the countryside as the source of Germanys cultural, moral and biological strength. The lead article, Stadt und Land - ein Schicksal! ('Town and Country - One Destiny!'), promotes the concept of harmony between urban and rural Germany within a unified national community. Particularly noteworthy is the magazines visual presentation. Strong photographic portraiture depicts farmers and rural workers as heroic national archetypes, while bold graphic illustrations and woodcut-inspired designs reinforce themes of labour, tradition and national identity. The high production values, modern layouts and sophisticated use of photography demonstrate the exceptional design quality of Die Pause, which combined cultural journalism with political and ideological messaging. As a contemporary document of National Socialist rural policy and cultural propaganda, this issue provides valuable insight into the regimes promotion of agriculture, traditional values and the peasantry as central elements of the German national community on the eve of the Second World War
