Erika - Die frohe Zeitung

Cover of Erika - Die frohe Zeitung fur Front und Heimat (Erika - The Cheerful Newspaper for Front and Home), No. 9, 1st year, published in Berlin in February 1940. Launched at the beginning of the Second World War, Erika was a weekly illustrated magazine intended to maintain morale among both German soldiers and civilians, combining entertainment, human-interest stories, humour, fiction, film coverage and reports from everyday life. The cover features actresses Erika von Thellmann and Karin Hardt, both associated with the popular film Sommer - Sonne - Erika. The accompanying caption playfully notes their similar appearance, presenting the magazines emphasis on cinema, celebrity culture and light entertainment during wartime. The title itself reflected the publications mission as a cheerful companion for 'Front und Heimat' (Front and Home), bridging the experiences of soldiers and civilians through a mixture of escapism and reassurance. Inside, the magazine combines military-themed features, winter leisure activities, domestic life, readers stories, illustrated humour and cultural content. This blend of entertainment and wartime messaging reflects a broader effort to preserve a sense of normality and social cohesion during the early months of the war, before the conflict began to affect Germany more directly. Erika succeeded the illustrated entertainment weekly Der Stern, which had focused on film, theatre, music, cabaret and popular culture before being absorbed into the new wartime publication in early 1940. As an early wartime issue, the magazine provides an interesting example of how popular illustrated publications adapted to wartime conditions while continuing to promote celebrity culture, leisure activities and everyday life alongside official messaging
