NS-Frauen-Warte, No 19, 7th Year

Cover of NS-Frauen-Warte, Heft 19, 7th year, dated 2 March 1939, the official womens magazine of the National Socialist movement. The cover features an idealised family scene by Prof. Georg Siebert (Karlsruhe), depicting parents and children working together in a garden beside a newly built home. Accompanied by the slogan 'Auf die Dauer kann ein lebendiges starkes Volk nicht in Schatten und Slums vegetieren, sondern es soll im Sonnenschein wohnen' ('In the long run, a living and strong people cannot exist in shadows and slums, but should live in the sunshine'), the image promotes themes of home ownership, family life, healthy living and connection to the land. Published by the National Socialist Womens Organisation (NS-Frauenschaft), NS-Frauen-Warte was the principal illustrated magazine aimed at German women during the Third Reich. Its pages combined domestic advice, social policy, fashion, childcare, housing, culture and ideology, presenting women as custodians of family, community and national values. This issue includes articles on home building, household design, domestic interiors, gardening and family life, alongside photographic features illustrating contemporary ideals of German domestic culture. The magazine is notable for its sophisticated visual presentation. Like many issues of NS-Frauen-Warte, the cover employs polished commercial illustration rather than overt political imagery, embedding ideological themes within attractive depictions of everyday life. As a result, the publication provides valuable insight into how concepts such as family, settlement, rural values and social renewal were communicated to a mass female readership in Germany on the eve of the Second World War
