Cover of Rhein-Main-Spiegel, August 1938 issue, a large-format illustrated monthly magazine published with the support of the regional tourism and transport authorities of the Rhine-Main area. Produced on high-quality glossy paper, the magazine combined travel, culture, commerce, industry and regional identity, presenting the Rhine-Main region as a modern, prosperous and interconnected economic centre. The striking cover design depicts a stylised train constructed from copies of the newspaper itself travelling across a map of the Rhine-Main region. The inventive photomontage reflects the influence of modern graphic design and commercial illustration during the late 1930s, while emphasising the publication�s role in connecting the towns, industries and cultural attractions of the region. The issue was published shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, at a time when regional development, transport infrastructure and tourism promotion formed an important part of public life. Contents include illustrated articles on housing developments and settlement planning, industrial expansion in Hanau, regional festivals, wine-producing towns along the Rhine, the Odenwald region, Wiesbaden, Worms, Rudesheim, local museums and traditional crafts. The magazine also documents contemporary architecture, transport networks, manufacturing, education and rural life, providing a detailed visual survey of the Rhine-Main area during the final years of peacetime Germany.
